LGBTQ+ Fears in the Current Political Climate

Having a set of beliefs or living a different lifestyle than what's considered to be "normal" can feel extremely lonely and even isolating. But it's important to know that you're not alone.

The world is often divided into right and wrong, but reality is rarely so straightforward. There isn't a right or wrong way to love someone. Love is love, no matter who it involves. Unfortunately, not everyone sees it that way. Human rights have come a long way, but we've still got a long way to go.

The current political climate is intense and divisive. The current president of the United States has expressed viewpoints and supported policies that are concerning to many, especially minorities and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. It's now more important than ever for people to have effective strategies for coping with fear and uncertainty. Here are some of the heightened fears in this political climate and ways you can cope.

Discrimination

Before the current administration took over, better policies were in place to protect a person's rights. These protected employment, education, health care, and equal access to housing.

Anti-discrimination policies previously in effect are being eliminated with Trump's presidency. Companies and universities are rescinding policies related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The new administration is working to make it harder for individuals who are among the LGBTQIA+ community to live openly, freely, and safely.

Transgender Athletes

The Trump administration is also working to pull funding from schools that are supporting transgender athletes. Thankfully, schools are fighting back with the laws under Title IX that prohibit sex-based discrimination in educational programs and activities.

Gender-Affirming Care

Other rights being revoked include those that were in place to protect gender-affirming care for transgender individuals. Shortly after being inaugurated into office, Trump worked to cut off treatment for transgender youth nationwide.

The relevant executive order signed by the president denies medically necessary care, such as hormone therapy and puberty blockers, to transgender people. It also aims to significantly reduce or cut the federal funding to any healthcare provider that refuses to prioritize these policies over their patients' needs.

Mental Health

Maintaining stable mental health when confronted with the possibility of losing basic human rights is no easy task. Stress, anxiety, fear, hopelessness, and depression are on the rise. Despite mental health struggles rising, the Trump administration has taken action that could reduce access to mental health professionals.

How to Cope

Even in scary times, there's hope. By seeking community, focusing on the joys still available to us all, and developing skills to cope with fear, we can move forward and stay healthy.

Find a Support System

You're not alone, even if it may feel extremely isolating right now. Lean on your loved ones during this time. This could mean your family, friends, or your chosen family. Let others show up to support you.

Practice Self-Care

Make sure you're taking care of yourself during this time. It can be easy to dismiss your own wants and needs and let your anxiety control you. Instead, find ways to practice self-care and mindfulness, such as breathing exercises, meditation, spending time outside, or engaging in regular exercise.

Seek Professional Help

Even though resources might feel limited right now, there are mental health professionals out there who understand what you're going through and can help you. Consider reaching out to a therapist who can help you find ways to better manage your emotions and cope moving forward.

Don't wait for the current political climate to change. You don't need to spend the next few years in this state just waiting for the next president to take over. Reach out today to learn more about how therapy can help you.
